How the English Language Was Made
In 55 B.C. Julius Caesar invaded Britain putting it in the western Civilization. Later in 43 A.D. Britain is invaded again but this time by Emperor Claudius, the Romans brought Latin, Greek, and Christianity to Britain giving the English language a kick start. By 410 - 449 A.D. the Saxons had brought Low German to Britain when the Visigoths attacked Rome .Later in 449 the Roman Empire failed economically, and politically. Back in Britain "Jutes" from Britainy were settling in "Angle-Land". Settlement was also being made in "Saxony" by the Germanic Angles and Saxons. The languages of the new people and cultures mixed creating a language known as Anglo- Saxon (old English). In the late 700's the Danish vikings raid England's northeast coast and drive the Saxons west for a while adding some Danish to the Anglo-Saxon English. Finally in 1066 William the Conqueror invades Britain from Northern France bring Norman French to the island and mixes with the Anglo-Saxons thus finally forming the language known as Middle English. |
